So wrong

Weird things from Saturday's trip to Savers:

So here's the thing...

Yesterday I decided to duck out at lunchtime and do a run to Savers. I hadn't been there for months and so thought I deserved a visit to break up my ordinary work day. I think I've told you before that I like our local Savers, only for the reason that it's in the old Ball and Welch department store, and I really like the feel it has. This time when I went in, the store smelled like toasted sandwiches, as opposed to it's usual aroma of musty mothballs and vanilla pot pourri. A bonus. Anyway, I was on a speed visit, being lunchtime and all, and there's this chick, right? She looks normal enough, just another shopper. But she ended up annoying the bejeebus outta me, because she was about two steps behind me, and checking out everything I was checking out, and I was really self-conscious about not being able to have a decent look because I'd turn round and bang into her. We almost met in the middle of the apron section, but I got this beauty first:

So here's the thing, I was developing OP-SHOP rage! I wanted to just scream at her "Get the **** out of my face!!!!!!!" I guess now you think I'm a totally bitch, or just loopy (well that last one's true) but a) consideration of personal space? and b) it was like buzzards circling. I ended up getting all cranky pants and giving up on the textiles and ventured upstairs to the kitchen stuff. And she stayed away. I noticed her again at the checkout ahead of me, and she'd bought the same silk scarf (vintage black and white with Aussie animals, 50's kitsch) that I'd put back on the shelf earlier. She's probably a lovely girl with great taste, but ooh I was irked. Am I the only person this happens to? Have I just been spoiled by no-one else looking for good stuff in my dagfest part of the world?
Upstairs I found an overpriced Alfred Meakin 'Royal Marigold' design plate, which I decided to bite the bullet and buy, as it was in reasonably good condition, and will go nicely in my Deco china collection.


As well as a Bargearse video, I picked up a bag of embroidery floss (yay), and this delightful kitty. Mmmm.
So the op-shop gods were kind really. Still haven't found my wire soap shaker though. Fingers remain crossed.

Typewriter lurve

After work on Tuesday, I swung by Savers, and yep, there was another portable typewriter there. I stopped myself from buying it...it was beige, unremarkable, and didn't appear to work. But of course, now I'm thinking about it! Argh! Stay strong, do not want a typewriter collection!!

Op-shop gods

As Kirsty always says, let the op-shop gods know what you want and eventually it will come to you. (Or something like that.) Yesterday whilst pottering around Savers, I picked up a ceramic salt cellar with a wooden lid for HP, as he'd been wanting one for a while now. As luck would have it, there were two there waiting for me, so I picked my fave, and toddled home with it. "Just like Nanna's!" said HP.

I was also looking at my "op-shop will provide" list again in the sidebar, I've got down there "78 records"...well I also picked out a few yesterday out of the stack that had recently been donated to Savers. I got a Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and a couple of others which I might blog tomorrow. Yay!

So in that spirit, oh op-shop gods, I'm after a vintage perpetual calendar, sort of like this one I found on Flickr. I'm getting a happy little collecting of vintage desk stuff going, and I'd love to add one of these. Please?

Yesterday afternoon...

after work, we ventured down to Savers to collect my kitchen cupboard (as mentioned last Tuesday). While waiting around the back, I stood and watched the guys unloading the Diabetes collection trucks, and quietly mused as to what could be contained in all the boxes and bags. Hmmm, so much booty.

Of course, you can't visit Savers without a quick squizz around the shelves...so I picked up a Woods Ware 'Beryl' sugar bowl, a nice glasses case and a record for the Kuties day on Sunday.

And HP found one of these:

Having only babbled on recently about how much I love my Mixmaster, ooh a Junior!! Its a white one and needs work, and a good clean (no pic as it's currently still in the car), but you can imagine what a happy little Vegemite I was to score it!

The kitchen cupboard? Oh, last time I looked it was still on the roofracks of the Laser. More adventures with that later.

Thrifty Tuesday

After work yesterday, I went for a wander around Savers and did a (wee) bit of purchasing. (!) The big item was a 50's kitchen cabinet, not overwhelmingly outstandingly gorgeous, but cream paint, weirdy Laminex and some decorative metalwork. The cabinet has been sitting at the store for a month or two now, as they originally had something stupid like $150 on it, and as much as I was looking for a storage cupboard for my bobbins room, I thought - no way. So today when I went back, they'd marked it down to $39.99 (what is with the .99 on everything?) and I decided I'd buy it as it has lots of cupboards for sewing junk, and two shelves fronted with glass which will make a nice home for my crafty books. Downsides - not sure it will actually FIT in bobbins room, have to get it home, HP will grumble, and I have to make space for it to go in. Anyway, we shall overcome...pics and update to follow.

Anyway, as well as the extravagance of that, I bought some textile and china items. And a couple of odds and sods. There weren't any good sheets today, but I scored a pillowcase, a fruity cafe curtain valance (to put around the bottom of a skirt I think), and two curtains.

One curtain is a sheer chiffon type, I'm not sure if it's too 'Saturday Show' - whata you think punters? I bought it with the intention of making a floaty Summer skirt.

Yes, sorry the pic is crappy but I took it this morning before work, and the light was bad, and I was in a hurry!

There was 6 of these little cups and saucers there, but I just bought one, as they were too expensive, and I don't really know what I'd do with them all, so I just bought a representative one to sit somewhere and look cute. They also had a yellow vintage Avon coffee pot bath oil bottle there, but it was $4.99 and I went "bah humbug". Other scores: 3 Meakin Art Deco saucers for the china collection, some sewing notions, a big 50's birdy vase (photo at the start of the post, on my office windowsill with Dad's orchids in it), and a 'shroom cannister without a lid that I've turned into a utensil holder. (HP was pleased I bought this one as he's frequently wrestling with our utensil drawer when it gets stuck.) So now I have to get to Wardrobe Refashionin' and make something out of these curtains...
