US woman allegedly stole daughter's identity to be a cheerleader

It sounds like a bad film, but a woman in the US allegedly tried to steal her daughter's identity to become a high school cheerleader.

It sounds like the plot of a bad movie, but Wendy Brown, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, faces a felony identity theft charge after enrolling in Ashwaubenon High School as her 15-year-old daughter, the Associated Press reports.

Her daughter lives in Nevada with her grandmother.

According to the complaint, Brown was trying to regain a childhood she felt she'd missed.

High school staff said she appeared to be very timid.

She even cried when she talked about moving from Pahrump Valley High School in Nevada, the school which, in reality, her daughter attends.

Despite looking older than other students, she was described as having the demeanour of a high school girl and didn't arouse suspicion.

A school liaison officer started investigating after Brown only attended the first day of classes last week, the complaint said.

Before school began, she allegedly attended cheerleading practice sessions and even went to a pool party at the cheerleading coach's house, but the $134.50 cheque she handed over for her uniform bounced.

If convicted, she could face up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
